Historically bad at UCLA

UCLA's winning % in the modern era pre-Chip was a robust .622, 20th overall. Chip is 34-34 in his time at UCLA, well below Toledo, Mora, and Dorrell - all of whom were fired at UCLA in similar time frames. To dispel the myth that somehow Chip'ss 7-5 should be considered an uptick unworthy of firing, here is the final season record for each:

Bob Toledo (2001): 7-5
Karl Dorrell (2007): 6-6
Jim Mora (2017): 5-6

DOWN BAD: How many wins in a row for chip to equal other fired coaches at ucla?

Chip would have to win 19 in a row to equal Bob Toledo's Win %, who was fired at 7-5 in Year 7 with a total record of 49-32

Chip would have to win 19 in a row to equal Jim Mora's Win %, who was fired at 5-6 in Year 6 with a total record of 46-30

Chip would have to win 12 in a row to equal Karl Dorrell's Win %, who was fired at 6-6 in Year 6 with a total record of 35-20

Chip is entering Year 7 with a 34-34 record - 2 of those wins against FCS schools. Note: no other UCLA coach has ever coached against FCS schools.

7-28 vs. teams that finish with a winning record

Chips record @ UCLA versus teams that finish with a winning record is 7-28 (.200)The point differential in these games is -281.

Uncompetitive in Conference

Chip has been wholly uncompetitive in the Pac-12, only finishing higher than 6th one time.

In 4 of his 6 years UCLA has finished 8th or worse in the Pac-12!

Special Note: After Chip Kelly's 5th season in which they finished 6th in the Pac12, he had 1 year left on his contract. While sitting at 27-29 in the 5 years, Jarmond issued him a 4-year extension 😂

Poor Recruiting

UCLA's recruiting has hit a low point during Chip's tenure due to his lack of desire to recruit High School athletes, which help maintain continuity and culture.

Even with Chip's purported mastery of the portal, Overall recruiting rankings have not been good compared to his peers and UCLA historically.

"Books and Ball"

“Books and ball,” coach Chip Kelly said, “that’s what this place is all about.” -Chip Kelly, LA Times 2022

Despite this statement, UCLA was at the bottom of the Pac-12's Football APR rankings for all but 1 year of Chip's tenure.

UCLA Tries to make the excuse that fans love Chip.

The attendance tells a different story.

Average Attendance by Coach

Toledo: 62,135
Dorrell: 64,541
Neu: 63,591
Mora: 67,629
Chip: 46,074
That's a 32% drop-off from Mora to Chip.

Subject: Urgent Concerns Regarding UCLA Football ProgramDear UCLA Administrators,I hope this letter finds you in good health. As a devoted supporter of UCLA athletics, I feel compelled to express my concerns regarding the current state of the football program under Coach Chip Kelly.Coach Kelly's six-year record of 34-34 falls significantly below the standards historically set at UCLA, and this mediocrity would have warranted a coaching change for any other UCLA coach in the modern era. The 7-28 record against teams finishing with winning records and only finishing above 8th place twice in six years further underscores the lack of competitive success. It is disheartening to witness a pattern where more successful coaches have been (correctly) relieved of their duties for achieving comparable or better records in a shorter timeframe. For instance, Bob Toledo was dismissed despite a 7-5 record, incorporating freshmen talent, and a demonstrated ability to recruit at a high level – a facet seemingly absent in Coach Kelly's tenure.A strong football program not only instills pride in the UCLA community but also serves as a vital component in recruiting top-tier student-athletes and attracting support from donors and fans. The current trajectory raises major red flags about the program's and current leaderships ability to maintain the excellence synonymous with UCLA athletics.I urge you to once again critically evaluate the football program's trajectory under Coach Kelly's leadership. As stakeholders deeply invested in the success aof UCLA, we should aspire to build a football program that reflects the university's commitment to excellence both on and off the field.Thank you for your time and consideration.Sincerely,
